Attention ukulele enthusiasts: your wait is over! Grab your ukes and come out to Swallow Hill just off Broadway on Yale (between the Gothic to the South and Herman’s to the North) on Saturday, February 9 to have yourself a ukein’ good time! A four-string instrument that is most associated with Hawaiian music, the ukulele was born in the 1880s out of two other instruments: the braguinha and the rajão, brought by Portuguese immigrants seeking work in the sugar cane fields in 1879. These craftsmen were instrument maker Manuel Nunes and companions Joao Fernandes and Augustine Dias.
